Elk Rapids thrives during the summer,
but it's not simply a one-season town.
With a village government and supportive
community committed to helping each
other succeed, Elk Rapids is the right
place for any business to grow.
The Established.
For over twenty years, Mullaly's 128 Studio & Gallery has exhibited and sold
the work of over 400 North American artists and craftsmen. Owner Barb
Mullaly and her husband visited every northern Michigan small town from
Northport to Petoskey before picking Elk Rapids for its forward thinking.
"We liked what we saw coming," she says. "Elk Rapids seemed to be looking
to the future but not rolling over itself with new ideas." For the past two
decades the village has stayed the course, growing responsibly.
The New.
Corey and Renee O'Kane saw an opportunity to relocate to Elk Rapids when
they spotted a void in the town's retail offerings. After doing their research,
the O'Kanes tapped into thirty years of family experience and opened Harbor
Flooring. As they built their storefront, the community showed up to support
them. "We were welcomed with open arms," says Corey. "For a new business
in Elk Rapids it's delightfully surprising to see how much people want to do
business locally. Everyone's incredibly helpful and receptive."
Transitioning.
After thirty years of visiting northern Michigan, Carol Pressman and her
husband traded in city life for country living. To support themselves, they
looked into buying an established area business. They bought Torch River
Hardware, in business since 1948. Pressman credits the store's reputation
for helping them succeed, but it's also about listening. "The majority of local
owners are committed to buying locally," she said. "If we know a customer
is buying elsewhere, we make an effort to stock what they really need."
This attention to people's needs, coupled with community loyalty, not only
benefits the customer, it benefits the business.
The Growing.
When northern Michigan business owners Andy and Jennifer LaPointe
decided to expand their business they looked to Elk Rapids as a second
location for Traverse Bay Farms. They chose Elk Rapids because of its location
and history as a business community. "Elk Rapids offers local merchants
the ability to serve both visitors and residents as a year round destination,"
says Jennifer. "The proximity to the harbor and to Traverse City allows us to
introduce our products and services to an entirely new group of people."
The Support.
Elk Rapids' government, Downtown Development Association, Chamber of
Commerce, and others work together to create a climate that attracts new
businesses while retaining the already vibrant businesses in town. From
upgrading to digital permits and a well-informed Web site to updating zoning
ordinances that provide state-of-the-art planning and zoning, Elk Rapids is
committed to supporting its business community.
This dedication, combined with the Elk Rapids lifestyle, creates a winning
locale for any business. Assistant Village Manager Mike Spence says, "As
small communities go, Elk Rapids is unique in its level of volunteerism, envi-
ronmental activism, and entrepreneurialism. Harnessing all of these qualities
to create a strong sense of place makes Elk Rapids a great place to live."
